The Simmon’s Varity Store and upstairs dwelling

It may seem strange to some that I have decided to record information about the North Village area where I was born and raised. Recently I was asked by a neighbour if there was any history written relating to the Village and this prompted me to take on this task. The Village area from my knowledge encompasses from Black watch pass East along Palmetto road connecting with Glebe Hill moving along to embrace bottom North Shore Road just prior to Grace Church and turning West taking us back past Government House front entrance back to Black Watch pass.
Villagers were very clannish and our young men were very protective of the women that lived in the area. We had everything in our little village that the community needed. Our Ma and Pa Shops, Churches, Band rooms, playing fields (Pig Field)Tailor Shops, Dry Cleaners and Schools. We have as our neighbour. The Governor of the Island and most people refered to one off our main streets in the earlier days as Government Gate Road now (St. Monica’s Road. At one point the Governor did use that road as early access to and from the premises.
Most of the children of the Village attended Central School(Victor Scott. I’m the author of a book “They paved the way” which chronicles the lives of some villagers and their accomplishment. The pride felt in being a part of the community. In working on the site I hope to relate as much history as I can so that the future generations will fully understand and remember not just the struggles but the accomplishments of our people in Bermuda. Remember that History is more than dates of conquest and date of Tragedies and Triumphs; History is the glory of success and agony of defeat of people. In lots of my submissions and oral traditions I will tell of real people warts and all -who make up the fabric of a blest community. Don’t misunderstand me I will cover other topics as well. WELCOME TO THE VILLAGE.
